Medicare &
Mental Health Care Plans

Butter Fish Services accepts funding through Medicare. Visit your GP to discuss your options and to take a mental health assessment. You may be required to pay a gap fee, depending on whether your GP bulk bills.

If you have a mental health disorder, you and your doctor can create a plan to treat it. This plan will include goals, treatment options and available support services. A mental health treatment plan lets you claim up to 20 sessions with a mental health professional each calendar year. Your doctor can refer you to mental health professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, counsellors, social workers and occupational therapists. For more information, visit Services Australia.

Private Health Insurance

Some aspects of mental health care can be covered on private health insurance, including hospital admissions and psychology services. Purchasing a private hospital policy may cover you for psychiatric treatment or drug and alcohol rehabilitation as a private patient. Some general treatment or extras policies also provide benefits towards psychology services and counselling. Waiting periods, benefits and limits vary between funds.

For more information visit the Commonwealth Ombudsman, learn more about and review the different policies available at, or contact your health fund directly.

Fee for Service

Anyone can access Butter Fish Services – even if you are self-funded.

If you’re not eligible for external funding through the NDIS, Medicare or private health insurance, you can also access Butter Fish Services by paying for services directly. Feel free to contact us to discuss your options.
