Insights into
Assessments

Our assessments are created only after we have spent one on one time with you to discuss what you need. There are no preconceived judgements or ideas about who you are or what your needs are. They are the tangible result of us better understanding your goals and the pathways to get there.

The value of the assessment is that the result can be used to guide differing levels and types of intervention, such as behaviour support, psychological or emotional support, learning support, and disability support.

They are the most effective tool for gaining greater insight and understanding and developing useful tools and strategies that you can use in your daily life.

Types of Assessments

The four (4) primary types of assessments that we at Butter Fish Services® are registered and accredited to deliver.

Behaviour Assessments

Behaviour Assessments can be either Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBA) or a Mealtime Management Plan, or both.

Our assessments collect information to help determine how to manage challenging behaviour patterns and disorders including: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder without Hyperactivity (ADD), and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).

These insights become the basis for a personalised Behaviour Support Plan (BSP)

Functional
Capacity Assessments

Functional Behaviour Assessments help identify the right support for challenges with cognitive ability, developmental hurdles (such as memory problems) and educational difficulties (learning issues and signs of dyslexia).

Functional Capacity Assessments can assist with ensuring you have a level of support and funding to successfully achieve positive goals and get more out of life. We take into account  individual functions and support personalised aspirations for daily living, community connection and vocational abilities.

These types of assessments include Psychosocial Functional Capacity Assessments, Supported Disability Accommodation Assessments (SDA) and Supported Independent Living Assessments (SIL).

Typically, a report is provided to the individual and the National Disability Agency, which assists with the decisions made regarding the level of support and funding under a National Disability Insurance Scheme plan.

A Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) helps identify and understand the following aspects of behaviour:

  • Form: the observable behaviour – What are they actually doing?
  • Function: the underlying cause – What is the goal of the behaviour?
  • Context – the setting: Where does it occur? What happens immediately before and after?

And include cognitive (IQ) testing, development (memory) testing, and educational (learning difficulties, dyslexia) testing.

Autism Spectrum Disorder
Diagnosis

An Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis determines to what extent an individual is on the autism spectrum, and it provides information about their support needs and any emotional or behavioural presentations.

This assessment is suitable for children over two years of age who require an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis, or where there has been conflicting opinions expressed by professionals and clarification is needed.

Early Development Assessment

Many of the parents we see who are seeking an Early Development Assessment have noticed some developmental issues that seem different to the cognitive, physical or behavioural milestones they were expecting. This can present as not speaking clearly or at all, difficulties with general gross motor skills such as feeding themselves or walking, and expressing themselves with aggression through tantrums, hitting, kicking or throwing objects.

This process is simply about finding answers where either no professional diagnosis has been reached, or a second opinion is desired. The quicker these answers can be identified, the faster we can work with you on effective treatment pathways.

These assessments provide information about a child’s progress and functioning across all developmental areas. They also determine whether early signs of delay, difficulty or disability are present.

Assessments can include one or any combination of: motor-skills testing, IQ testing, testing for learning difficulties, a development assessment or memory monitoring.
