International Day of People with Disability: Celebrating inclusion and diversity in Australia - disability

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is celebrated on the 3rd December each year to raise awareness of disability issues and promote the rights and well-being of people with disability. It is a day to celebrate the diversity and achievements of people with disability, and to work towards a more inclusive and accessible society.

In our journey at Butter Fish Services, we get to stand alongside incredible individuals dealing with various conditions like Neurological Conditions, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Chronic Conditions, Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and more. We truly believe that every person with a disability is not just capable but wholly worthy of leading a life packed with quality, pursuing their goals, and reaching their aspirations. It’s more than a job for us; it’s a passion to champion and uplift each unique individual we have the privilege to serve. If you’re someone who requires the support of a Practitioner or Occupational Therapist, reach out to us today.

In Australia, there are over 4.4 million people with disability, making up around 18% of the population. People with disability can experience a wide range of barriers in their lives, including discrimination, lack of access to services and opportunities, and social isolation.

IDPwD is an important opportunity to challenge these barriers and to promote the inclusion of people with disability in all aspects of society. It is also a day to celebrate the many contributions that people with disability make to our communities.

The theme for IDPwD 2023 is “United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with and by persons with disabilities.” This theme emphasises the importance of working together to ensure that people with disability are able to participate fully and equally in all aspects of society, and to benefit from the SDGs.

How can I get involved in IDPwD?

There are many ways to get involved in IDPwD. Here are a few ideas from the Butter Fish team:

  • Attend an event or activity in your community.
  • Learn more about disability issues and the rights of people with disability.
  • Talk to your friends, family and colleagues about disability and inclusion.
  • Support businesses and organisations that are committed to disability inclusion.
  • Advocate for policies and practices that promote the rights of people with disability.

There are a few events and activities that are happening in Australia for IDPwD 2023, that we’d encourage you to check out!

IDPwD National Awards: These awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of people with disability and the organisations that support them.

IDPwD Schools Program: This program provides schools with resources and activities to help them teach students about disability and inclusion.

IDPwD Community Grants: These grants support community organisations to deliver projects and activities that promote the inclusion of people with disability.
