Supporting your most important years

Raising a child isn’t easy. Especially if you’re facing behavioural challenges that affect the child, and even your own sense of wellbeing. There are ways to help you through these, and turn those challenges into a more productive and positive behavioural cycle.

Our extensive experience with children provides us the care and understanding to recognise that kids and their families have specific and unique needs that require an individual family-centred approach.

We provide support to parents, families and carers who want to discuss concerns about their child’s development and wish to better understand their child’s support needs.

What is Early Childhood Early Intervention?

Our ECEI services support children to reduce the impacts of any potential developmental challenge or disability. We aim to develop the skills needed to achieve the best possible outcomes now and throughout their life journey, at a vital developmental time in their life.

An Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) approach is available to all children under nine — from birth until they start school — with a developmental delay or disability.

Nurturing healthy relationships and supporting important milestones

It’s our job to help increase your understanding of your child’s development and the activities and services available to support you, your child and your family. This includes:

  • Tailoring a plan that will support your child’s individual needs and circumstances.
  • Connecting you to the community to best support your child achieving their goals ongoing.
  • Helping your child develop skills in play, communication, social relationships and functional behaviours.
  • Helping increase your child’s independence and ability to adapt to their environment.
  • Improving your child’s readiness to participate in childcare, kindergarten and school.
  • Establishing how your child can be best supported with the approved NDIS funding they have.

If this is the case, we’ll help you get started with a developed plan, provide a better understanding of the types of services you can purchase with your child’s funding, find providers who meet your needs, and help you with service agreements.

How can our ECEI Specialists help your child?

As stressful as challenging behaviours and responses are to you (and your wellbeing is vitally important to a positive overall outcome), it’s equally, if not more so, to your child. They are unlikely to understand why they feel and behave the way they do, and so can’t see a way out. ECEI specialists can help find clarity on why, and a pathway out, in ways that can rarely be found without professional support.

We are a registered NDIS provider of Early Childhood Intervention (ECEI) services, with practitioners who follow the evidence-based best practice ECEI approach designed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

Our caring and qualified ECEI specialists spend time getting to know you and your child, listening to what is important to you, and assisting you to plan the next steps, now and into the future.

When should I reach out for Early Childhood Early Intervention?

Essentially, if the behaviour of your child is becoming an extremely challenging and overwhelming task, or your child is developing behaviours you think are detrimental to their development. you may need to reach out for Early Childhood Early Intervention. We see a lot of parents who have waited to take this step due to feeling judged or misunderstood by other providers, or friends and family. Feeling like they should be able to handle it themselves, or that there is something wrong with them as a parent or their child.

These behaviours can present in a lot of different ways; toilet training issues such as consistent bed or pant wetting, persistent and heightened tantrums, aggression toward others (kids at school, teachers, parents or their siblings), aggression or violence toward animals, harmful behaviour toward themselves (hitting head against floor or wall, self-harming). These are just a few, there are many more ways children ‘speak’ to us about underlying issues.

ECEI is there to work with you through these challenges by focusing on your child specifically, identifying the core issue/s and creating a personalised plan to teach them the tools and techniques that will help them in life now, and right through to adulthood.

How does an ECEI Therapist help?

  • Administering multidisciplinary therapy to support your child’s learning and development and help them reach developmental milestones.
  • Coordinating services for children with complex needs, including developmental delays and learning difficulties.

What's involved in preparing for ECEI support?

Consultation

Our practitioners follow the evidence-based best practice ECEI approach that has been designed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). We will work closely with you and your child to identify and/or explore any developmental delays or disabilities. Every child is different, so we tailor support to your child’s individual circumstances and needs.

Referrals

We will then provide information about the supports and services available in your local community to help your child achieve their goals. The type of support will depend on what is best for your child and your family. This might include playgroups, educational settings and health centres. Some short-term intervention may also be provided if it is identified as the most appropriate support.

If your child requires longer-term childhood intervention support, we can work with you to develop a plan that supports your goals and link with your chosen providers.

Monitoring

Our practitioners will monitor and review your child’s progress against the goals you have set and support your family to improve your child’s independence and participation in everyday activities.

Butter Fish Services® provides authentic support and real outcomes.

We undertake Early Childhood Early Intervention plans for children under seven years of age.
